Thoughts on small stakes online multi table poker tournaments (MTTs)

Saturday, June 6th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Tournament | No Comments

I have on average played around 5 small stakes (buyin of 20$ or less) online poker MTTs a week this year. That works out to 120 tournaments in total so far. Out of these 120 tournaments I have made the final table in two of them with a second place finish in a 10000$ guaranteed as my best result. Usually I have busted out during the middle or late stages meaning that on average each tournament represents 3 hours of playing time.  I just realize now that this means I have spent 300-400 hours this Read more [...]

Submitted by John, this article belongs to the Poker Tournament series You can find a lot of different poker games online lately. Not only there's the difference between tournament poker and cash games, you can also choose between long handed and short handed games, single or multi-table tournaments,... . But there's another important factor which determines your game: the amount of chips you sit down with (in regard to the size of the blinds). It's a known fact among the more experienced poker Read more [...]

Submitted by Dungbeetle, this article belongs to the Poker and Life series It's been a while since I've checked up on Dungbeetle's poker life on the Magical Mystery Poker Tour blog. Last I heard he was not doing well and sadly the bad streak has not improved. Below is a particular sad post which I have chosen to post here because it reminds me that no matter how many times we keep saying to ourselves that poker is a variance game and bad beats / losing streaks are supposed to happen, sometimes Read more [...]

How are poker bots raking online money?

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Rules, Poker Strategy | 12 Comments

Submitted by Thomas, this article belongs to the Poker Strategy series. Sophisticated card-playing robots – known as “poker bots” – have now been playing online for years and the trend is accelerating. The increasing activity on poker bots forums and the growing interest generated by the annual poker bot competition (organized by the University of Alberta) are prime indicators of this trend. Of course, online poker rooms have been fighting bots since the beginning as it hurts their revenues Read more [...]

Betting@betfair’s poker portal

Sunday, May 10th, 2009 | Poker Articles | No Comments

Introduction Betfair.com was the World's first betting exchange, opening it's doors to online punters in June 2000. What sets Betfair apart from regular bookmakers is that customers chose their own odds and whether they want to back or lay an event. This means that at Betfair you are betting against other customers in what can best be described as the sportsbetting equivalent of a stock market. As payment for organizing thousands and thousands of bets between customers every day Betfair charges Read more [...]

Thoughts on poker tournament strategy

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Strategy, Poker Tournament | 13 Comments

This article belongs to the Poker Tournament series. Lately I have come to realize that playing Multi-table Poker Tournaments requires a special mental mindset that not all poker players possess. On one hand you never stand to lose more than the tournament buyin, but the price you pay for this privilege is that most of the tournaments you enter will be a complete waste of time - when evaluated by a profit per hour criteria - unless you make it to the final table. The path to the final table Read more [...]

AA, where are you?

Monday, April 27th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Mathematics | 1 Comment

Submitted by Mctap, this article belongs to the Poker Mathematics series. This blog consists of 3 separate posts on my site that I have consolidated into 1 longer, more detailed post here. About a month and a half ago I decided to check out my Poker Tracker stats for Poker Stars and noticed something interesting. At that point in time I had only played about 656 tournament hands and still hadn't seen AA. No big deal as I was still up a few bucks since I started. I just found it interesting Read more [...]

Don’t Get Married to a Hand

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Strategy | 11 Comments

Submitted by Vic Porcelli, this article belongs to the Poker Strategy series. How many times have you folded pocket Aces after the flop?   Sounds absurd I know, but what if the flop is K K J?  Or if the flop came 10 J Q?  Depending on the post flop betting you may be a big underdog.  So can you lay them down? Dennis Phillips finished third in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event.  Dennis is from my hometown of St. Louis.  He won a $200 double shootout satellite at Harrah’s Casino Read more [...]

Submitted by McTap03, this article belongs to the Poker Projects series A new challenge is on the horizon that will be played along side my other current challenges (see my blog for those challenges). First, let me provide a little info before explaining this challenge. I'm a HUGE NY Giants fan. It is almost obsessive once the season is in full swing. Most of my free time during the week leading up to the game is spent analyzing match-ups, talking about it on various forums, and making my picks Read more [...]
