Short stack cash game strategy – bankroll project
Sunday, August 17th, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | No Comments
I bet you have been waiting in great anticipation for my next short stack strategy update. I have been purposely waiting until I hit the 50 session hours mark so I could compare my short stack strategy results to my ealier regular cash game project.
Here’s a quick summary
- 50,45 session hours played
- Bankroll high: +42,56$
- Bankroll low: -28,9$
- Largest losing session: -13,04$
- Largest winning session: 23,15$
- End result: +25,75$
Short stack strategy project:
- 50 session hours played
- Bankroll high: +78$
- Bankroll low: -6,22$
- Largest losing session: -36,7$
- Largest winning session: 36,22$
- End result after 50 hours: +49$
If there is one conclusion I can make on my limited statistics it is that following the short stack strategy probably results in larger swings in your bankroll. Having said that it automatically follows – in my case at least – that the short stack strategy approach is simply more fun. I dislike the long grinding sessions…it’s simply too boring for me. I also like the simplicity of the short stack strategy. You will either be folding or putting it all out there.
I have also been playing quite a few tournaments lately to practice some “real” poker. I have had very limited success which has meant a reduction in my tournament bankroll from 300$ to 200$. I am seriously considering cashing out this bankroll because I would hate to lose it all.
I will leave you with an updated graph over my short stack strategy project. There are some big swings in there:-)

SNG Bankroll project update 6
Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | 1 Comment
I have not been playing poker since my last update July 15th. The reasons are two fold: time and interest.
Time
It´s my holiday now, so I am trying to keep work related activities to a minimum. Why? I am actually very motivated to work on our projects at least 12 hours a day, but it can be a very useful exercise to try to keep away from work. This helps you to stay motivated and will prevent you from burning out.
Interest
It can become very tedious to play poker. Just sitting there grinding, always trying to maintain your A-gaming. I am on a strict bankroll management program, so there is not room for adventure trips to other levels. The problem arises if you start to combine playing poker with something boring or something you have to do, this will in the long run most definitely reduce your chances of becoming a winning player. I aim to have a mental state that poker is fun, thrilling and a dynamic game against other players.
In order to maintain this state I sometime take a break from the game. Other good tactics are to try other games, poker tournaments, or even live poker. I was considering playing some Omaha poker, just for the fun of it. But I finally decided that a break would be best.

Poker short stack strategy and poker bankroll building
Sunday, July 27th, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | No Comments
I have made mistakes for sure, but in 99% of the hands I have played I have stuck to my short stack strategy.
Perhaps it doesn’t work. I am however more inclined to blame simple variance.
I have been dealt slightly below average hands, when I have had good hands my opponents hands have been better, and when I have raised with good hands my opponents haven’t called so often.
In addition I am of course playing too high limits which is most likely the biggest mistake I am making.
I still have faith in my short stack strategy, but if I go broke this project will be a good lesson for others and a real life example of bad bankroll management.
Having said that I have actually grown quite fond of my bankroll, so I will be sad if it disappears. It has been with me since the 10th of April where I deposited 30$ into a Celeb Poker account to start a SNG bankroll building project.
My poker bankroll is now 65,78$ after my latest 2 session hours played on 4 tables. The graph below shows my accumulated profit as a function of the session hours I have played.
Good luck out there!

SNG Bankroll project update 5.
Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | No Comments
Brief update about my SNG project. I have now played 56 SNG, which is still far to few to predict whether I am a winning player on the limit I am playing at. I am up 5$ since my last update a week ago, played 20 SNGs. That is not very satisfying, but it also becomes more and more clear that the rake is “eating” up the profit.
Statistics are now:
Stats so far:
SNG Played: 56
Rake: $36
In the money: 38 times. 67.8%.
Net profit: $49

Sit and go poker bankroll project, #4
Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | No Comments
I haven’t been playing as much as I hoped the previous week for several reasons. The Internet was down one of the days because the town I live in on Malta, Sliema, had an electicity break down. So no Internet for half a day. I also hit a bad run of losses. For me that is three SNG lost in a row (remember that 50% of the participants recieve a prize in the SNGs I play).
My personal rule is that I stop playing if I hit such a bad run. I know three in a row is not much, but from experience I know that I change my game after a minor loosing streak. My profit horizon changes from a long term to a short term view. That is, I tend to be more willing to call coin flip situations, where I could wait for a better position to put all my chips in the middle.
Statistics are now:
Stats so far:
SNG Played: 36
Rake: $26
In the money: 18 times. 69.2%.
Net profit: $43
So down $23 since my last update.
I mentioned in my previous update, Sit and go poker bankroll project #3, that I would explain how Harringtons M can be used in SNG and how people often do not take this term into into consideration.
Harringtons “M” refers to a ratio of your chip stack compared to the blinds. The number gives an indication of how much preasure you are under because of the blinds.
If your M is 5 or under your only option is fold or all in. Many players do not take this into consideration and simply limp in. The result will often be that a player in a later position raises the pot or that you do not not hit anything on the flop and fold the hand to a raise.
The correct play would be to either go all in or to fold and wait for a better position. An all in would in most situation be the correct play.

Basically I am on fire on the poker tables with my new short stack strategy. I am playing the 25$ max buyin No Limit full ring tables at Everest Poker, and buying in with 5$. Whenever I reach 4$ on a table I make a 1$ rebuy to 5$, and if I lose my stack I make a full rebuy to 5$.

I have increased my poker bankroll from 72$ to 125$ during 9 session hours of short stack strategy play. During this time I have made 6 full rebuys due to hands I lost.
Just to remind you, this is my modified Ed Miller short stack strategy (there are a few modification and resolved issues now)
- I will buy in with 20xBB, starting on the 0,15/0,25c tables
- I will rebuy to 20xBB when my stack drops below 15xBB
- I will leave the table whenever I reach 40xBB
- In early position I will raise AA,KK,QQ,JJ,AKs,AKo and 1010 8-10xBB preflop, and always go all in on the flop. I will go all in on preflop reraises
- In middle position I will also raise AQs,99 and AQo, go all in on the flop and on preflop reraises
- In late position I will add 88, AJs, 77, AJo, ATs and KQs to my raising hands, go all in on the flop and on preflop reraises.
- When I am in Big Blind and don’t have an early position starting hand, I check if there are no preflop raises. On the flop I only bet if I hit something good like two pairs, and I only call with drawing hands if the pot odds are ridiculously good.
- When I am in Small Blind and don’t have an early position starting hand, I call up to the big blind if there are no preflop raisers, otherwise I fold. On the flop I only bet if I hit something good like two pairs, and I only call with drawing hands if the pot odds are ridiculously good.
- If I have raised preflop in position and don’t hit the flop I go all in if my opponents check. If they make a significant bet before me I evaluate the situations on a case to case level. I would say I fold the majority of the times when my opponents bet.
In conclusion I really think this short stack strategy works and I will keep you updated with my progress.

In my excitement I have already made plans for my next increase in limits:
- When I hit 200$, I will buyin with 10$ on the 50$ max buyin No Limit full ring tables at Everest Poker
- If I drop to 150$, I will go back to 5$ buyins at the 25$ tables and wait until I reach 200$ again
- When I reach 400$ I will take a shot at the 100$ max buyin tables with 20$ at a time.

Sit and go bankroll project, #3

Sit and go poker bankroll project, #3
This is the third update on my sit and go project. I have now doubled my stack, started with $60 and my balance at Inter Poker is now $123.
But rake does lower the profit significantly. I have payed $19 in rake so far. So if I was signed up for a rakeback deal I would have received 30% back.
I am still playing the 50% double up sit and go, as mentioned in the previous updates. It does give the game a different element than normal sit and go´s. People are very tight, but do not seem to take into account which battles they should take and at what time. In my next update I will try to explain how Harrington’s M-value can be used to time your play according to the level of blinds in the sit and go tournaments I play.
Statistics are now:
Stats so far:
SNG Played: 26
Rake: $19
In the money: 18 times. 69.2%.
Net profit: 63$

SNG Poker Bankroll project, update #2
Saturday, June 28th, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | No Comments
Follow up on the SNG Bankroll Building Project.
I am still playing the 50% double up SNG at Inter Poker, where half of the contenders double up on the buy in. But because of a software update the lobby currency is now only UK Sterling. So the table is now £5+£0.5 which is approximately $10. Very high buy ins compared to my very low bankroll.
But it seems like it’s the poker gods intention that I should have a go at the higher table. And don´t ever go against the poker gods!
This is of course one of the biggest errors you can make. Even though you have an edge at a given table your risk of ruin decreases with the size of your bankroll. And with a bankroll of 8 buy ins my risk is too large if I want to build a bankroll.
I have therefore moved down to a more appropriate level compared to my bankroll. Most pro players would advise you to have at least 50-100 buy ins when playing SNG.
SNG statistics so far:
SNG Played: 18
Rake: $11.5
In the money: 13 times. 72%.
Net profit: 40.5$

Michael’s SNG Bankroll Building Project

Hi Guys
I have finally found the time to play some more poker. So will have a go at building a bankroll by playing SNG’s at Inter Poker (Cryptologic).
I have deposited $60 and will start playing $5 ($0.5 rake) SNG’s and gradually move up in buy ins. This gives a rather small bankroll compared to the buy in, only 10 x buy in (plus rake), so will have to try to avoid back luck… How does one avoid bad luck?? My first goal is to stabilize my bankroll for $5 buy ins. Should in theory have at least 50 buy ins.
As for activity, I hope to be able to play 5-10 SNG´s per day.
The process so far:
8 SNG played.
In the money: %
Winnings minus buy in: 0.5$
$4 rake.
Net profit: -$3.5
Mark’s personal bankroll building project; update 3
Saturday, June 21st, 2008 | Poker Articles, Poker Bankroll Building, Poker Projects | No Comments
I have been really busy this week, working as a research project manager during the day and on the PokerBRB Community in the evenings. I think we have managed to integrate the 4 branches of our community nicely; I am really looking forward to see if our changes bear fruit and increase traffic to our sites.
The downside to my busy week has manifested itself in my Bankroll Building Project; I have only managed to play 6 session hours since my last update. On top of this I haven’t won a single session since I started at Everest poker.
Here’s the cold hard facts:
Session hours played: 41,15
+/-: +23$
Bankroll: 70$
I have started a new Bankroll building thread on the PokerBRB forum, and hope my bitching and whining in this thread will bring me back on track.
The first post in my new thread says it all:
My personal bankroll building project
June 21st
If you exist, stop screwing me!!
Finally I had time to play poker again, and just finished playing 6 session hours:
I got AA 3 times, everyone folded
I got KK once, everyone folded
I got AK 6 times, people called my preflop raise and I hit nothing on the flops.
I got a set twice, everyone folded
I got curious once and it cost me 5$
I lost to a runner runner straight once
Final result: down 8$ for 6 session hours
Since I started playing at Everest poker I have lost almost 2 buyins.
Here’s an up to date update:
Session hours played: 41,15
+/1: 23$
Bankroll: 70$
This will be my new whining and bitching thread for my bankroll building project. If possible I will whine more than I did in my last thread, and I will keep whining until I reach my 200$ bankroll goal.
